African AI Leadership Summit 2026 Set for Lagos as Continent Focuses on Governance, Ethics and Investment

Lagos, Nigeria – Policymakers, technology executives, investors, cybersecurity experts and startup founders from across Africa and beyond will gather in Lagos from 21–22 October 2026 for the African AI Leadership Summit (AALS), a two-day event aimed at accelerating responsible AI development on the continent.

Hosted by Catalyst AI Hub International and convened by Dr. Daniel Adaramola, the summit is expected to draw more than 500 delegates from over 40 countries. Organisers describe it as a platform to move Africa’s AI ambitions “from vision to velocity,” with a strong emphasis on governance frameworks, ethical innovation and investment opportunities.

Agenda and Structure

The programme combines practical training with high-level discussions:

  • Day 1 (21 October): A full-day executive AI security training titled “AI Under Attack: Mastering LLM & GenAI Data Security in Financial Institutions.” The instructor-led bootcamp targets leaders responsible for AI and cybersecurity governance, featuring hands-on activities and practical tools.
  • Day 2 (22 October): The main leadership summit under the theme “From Vision to Velocity: Powering Africa’s AI-Led Future.” Sessions will include keynote presentations, expert panels, a live startup showcase where selected African AI companies pitch to investors, networking, and an industry exhibition.

The agenda is structured around five pillars:

  1. The Africa AI Mandate – policy, governance and national AI strategies
  2. The Intelligence Economy – investment and market creation
  3. Technology & Innovation – building AI solutions tailored to African contexts
  4. AI for African People – applications in health, agriculture, finance and education
  5. The Next Generation – startups, talent development and entrepreneurship

Discussions are expected to address building robust data infrastructure, nurturing local AI talent, establishing ethical guidelines, and fostering regional collaboration. Stakeholders from government, the private sector and civil society will work toward actionable policies and frameworks for responsible AI growth.

Speakers and Participants

Confirmed speakers include figures from finance, government, AI research and cybersecurity such as Sithembile Songo, Abdul-Hakeem Ajijola, Dr. Favour-Femi Oyewole, Alex Tsado, Dr. Harrison Nnaji, Dr. Ayodele Bakare, Mohamed Hamed and Irene Corpuz. The event targets business and technology leaders, government officials, investors, venture capital firms, startup founders, and financial services executives.

Registration is open for Day 1 training, Day 2 summit, or both, with additional opportunities for startups, speakers and partners.

Broader Context

The summit comes at a time of rising continental focus on AI. Recent developments include the Africa AI Governance Index highlighting implementation gaps across 54 countries, the African Development Bank and UNDP’s $10 billion AI productivity initiative, new low-cost compute facilities in Nigeria, and national strategies in several countries. Nigeria itself has advanced its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and related digital legislation.

Organisers and observers see the Lagos gathering as an opportunity to translate policy discussions into concrete investment, ethical standards and local capacity. Challenges remain, including infrastructure gaps, energy constraints, skills shortages and the need to ensure AI solutions address African realities rather than simply importing external models.

As one of the more prominent AI leadership events scheduled on the continent this month, the African AI Leadership Summit is positioned to influence how governments and the private sector approach governance, ethics and capital allocation in the years ahead. Outcomes will depend on whether the conversations produce measurable follow-through beyond the two days in Lagos.
